With so many dragons introduced across two seasons of House of the Dragon, it is worth stacking them up against each other to see who would actually come out on top in a real fight. Size, age, combat history, and rider skill all factor into this, so here is how we would rank every dragon revealed so far.

Strongest Dragons in House of the Dragon
Balerion earns the top spot purely on the basis of legacy and scale. Even though we never see him in action during the show, his skull alone is large enough to dwarf a person standing inside it, and he was powerful enough to carry Aegon the Conqueror through the unification of an entire continent. Nothing else on this list has those kinds of feats.
Vhagar is the dragon actively proving herself in the current story. As the last living creature from Aegon's original conquest, her sheer age alone makes her a different category of threat compared to younger dragons, and her track record in the show backs that up. She has already taken down Arrax and killed Meleys in direct combat, making her the most dangerous dragon we have actually watched fight.
A Tier
Caraxes earns his spot through pure ferocity matched to an equally vicious rider in Daemon Targaryen. The Blood Wyrm has already proven its combat capability against the Crabfeeder and continues to be wielded as a serious threat in the Riverlands.
Meleys would rank even higher if not for her loss to Vhagar. Being described as old and cunning with genuine fearsome potential when provoked puts her near the top, and the fact that it took both Vhagar and Sunfyre working together to bring her down says a lot about her capability.
Vermithor is the third largest dragon in the show and was loyal to Jaehaerys for 55 years, which speaks to both his power and temperament. The fact that he sat riderless for so long after Jaehaerys's death until someone brave enough came along only adds to his mystique.
B Tier
Syrax is consistently present throughout the show but has not yet been shown in direct combat, which makes her harder to rank higher despite being described as huge and formidable.
Silverwing has a respectable lineage having once been ridden by Queen Alysanne, but her current rider Ulf has not given us much to judge her combat potential by yet.
Dreamfyre is rarely flown which limits how much we can judge her capabilities, though her history suggests real power that simply has not been showcased on screen.
Sunfyre sits here on potential as much as proven results. Despite being severely wounded in his fight against Meleys and Vhagar combined, the fact he survived that encounter at all says something about his durability, even if he is currently grounded.
Seasmoke is still young in dragon terms but the unique way he sought out his own rider in Addam suggests an unusually strong bond and potentially significant untapped ability.
C Tier
Moondancer trades size for speed and agility, making her a fast and nimble option but clearly outmatched in raw power against the larger dragons on this list.
Tessarion breathes blue flame and is noted as younger than several other major dragons, putting her firmly in developing potential territory rather than proven threat status.
Vermax has been useful for transportation and diplomacy throughout the story but has not been shown in any combat scenario that would suggest significant fighting prowess yet.
D Tier
Arrax being five times smaller than Vhagar tells you everything about where he sits on this list, and his fate against Vhagar and Aemond confirms that size difference mattered enormously.
Tyraxes has been used primarily as a bargaining chip for alliances rather than shown in any combat capacity, leaving very little to judge beyond his diplomatic utility.
Stormcloud is still too young to have done anything noteworthy, currently just bonding with children rather than flying in any meaningful capacity.
