Stardew Valley Marriage Candidates Tier List

Running a successful farm in Stardew Valley takes dedication, but choosing the right person to share it with might be an even tougher decision. Between the base game and the popular Stardew Valley Expanded mod, there are 19 romance candidates to meet, befriend, and possibly fall head over heels for, and trust me, no two are alike.

I actually have played this game for longer than I care to admit, married these pixel people, and changed my mind about most of them at least once. With that experience in mind, I put together a full ranking of every bachelor and bachelorette from both the original game and Stardew Valley Expanded.

How I Ranked These Candidates

Now how I ranked these candidates is not purely on how nice they are or how good their gifts are. I actually care about the heart events, the personality, the dialogue after marriage, and honestly, the whole vibe of each character.

A spouse can give you great gifts every week and still feel like a cardboard cutout, while someone with weaker gifts can completely win me over with how they talk to me once we tie the knot in the game. I also factor in how the candidate acts after marriage. A lot of them lose their spark the second they move onto your farm, and that matters to me.

Stardew Valley Marriage Candidates Tier List

Best Marriage Candidates in Stardew Valley

Abigail

Abigail is my go-to candidate in basically every save file. She is a goth girl who plays video games with you, likes swords, plays the flute, and eats actual rocks for fun. When you befriend her, she will appear in the mines. She also has guinea pig with a story behind it (which you can unlock after you marry her), and last but not least, she confesses her feelings to you using a spirit board. I mean, how weirdly awesome is that?

Is her story the most complex in the game? No. But she fights beside you in the mines, her energy is unmatched, and marriage doesn’t erase her personality. A lot of games flatten romance characters into generic spouses afterward, but Abigail still sounds unmistakably like herself. She feeds the animals, still plays games and imagines ghosts, worries about you in the mines. That consistency is why she sits at the top.

Leah

Leah is what happens when heart events are done right. Her cutscenes actually tell a full story, following her growth as an artist and her shaky conidence. You watch her deal with her clingy ex, find her footing, andeventually leave her old life behind to move in with you. It feels great to marry her because it really feel like you got to know her.

Her dialogues are very interesting, too. She notices small things most people ignore, like rain on trees, quiet evenings, muddy days, mushrooms in the woods. Her dialogue focuses on presence rather than excitement. She is not dramatic, but intimate in a calm way.

Lance (SVE)

After you play the Expanded mod, you will definitely feel that Lance is the best bachelor to marry. He is an adventurer from the First Slash Clan who protects the Fern Islands. Why I keep him in a spot this high is again, because he keeps his own life after marriage. He splits his time between home and traveling around, and he never loses his spark.

His dialouge gives the impression of someone who has traveled, fought, and seen strange things, but who becomes unexpectedly gentle in private. Some lines like, "You were talking in your sleep again. Something about moonlight and roots. Should I be taking notes?" shows that he’s genuinely attentive to you. Lance's affection toward you is open and sincere rather than awkward or teasing, which is why he is the best.

A-Tier Marriage Candidates

Victor (SVE)

When I see Victor the first time, I feel like he is a prissy rich boy who only talks about his mom and money. However, when I stick with him, he grows into one of the sweetest and most supportive characters in the entire game. His backstory, especially the heartbreaking scene at his cat, Dewey's grave, gives him real emotional depth.

As a husband he is pure comfort. He gives thoughtful gifts, hands you gold bars to "buy yourself something nice," and he loves books and games (me too, Victor, me too!) On top of that, he loves Spaghetti and Topaz, both cheap and easy to get. He edges out Magnus for me because that quiet, homey sweetness just hits different.

Magnus (SVE)

In SVE, the Wizard finally gets a full name, Magnus Rasmodius, and becomes romanceable. In the mornings he might hand you a Triple Shot Espresso, which honestly is the best possible gift before running around the farm and taking care of crops and animals all day, and after marriage he even tries baking for you, gifting homemade Blueberry Tarts and Chocolate Cake.

Beyond the gifts, his dialogue is incredibly warm and magical. He talks about singing trees, protective charms, ancient spells, and how your farm finally feels like home to him, making the relationship feel both cozy and deeply romantic. If you reach 14 Heart Events with him, you will realize how magical he really is. Magnus is calm and affectionate in his own quiet, mysterious way, and he still gets to keep doing his wizard thing even after he marries you. So it's cool!

Harvey

Harvey is the comfiest husband in the valley. Some people call him a safe or boring choice, and I think they are missing the point. He gives off this warm, calm energy that makes you feel safe, which is fitting since he is the town doctor and the person you run to when you faint in the mines.

He always worries about your safety, encourages healthy habits, and expresses deep gratitude for the life you’ve built together after marriage. After marriage, he keeps his life as Pelican Town's doctor, and he becomes becomes one of the most caring and practical spouses, often offering helpful food like Complete Breakfast in the morning or hearty dinners such as Salmon Dinner and Vegetable Medley.

Maru

Maru is so underrated it actually bothers me. She is a brilliant scientist who stargazes with you and lights up when you bump into her around town. Her ten-heart event is one of the best in the game and shows off her curiosity perfectly.

After marriage, she moves into the farmhouse while still keeping her own identity and routine, including working at the clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays and spending time in her workshop behind the house. She brings a nice balance of independence and partnership, and sometimes she even brings you thoughtful gifts that she actually made herself in the workshop.

Claire (SVE)

Claire is a quiet, reserved cashier at JojaMart who buses in from the countryside and dreams of a bigger life. She enjoys reading, dancing, and films, and if you finish the Community Center and unlock the movie theater, she moves over to work there instead.

Here is why I rate her so highly: she is one of the few spouses who keeps her actual job after marriage instead of just hanging around the farm all day. That little touch makes her feel like a real person with her own life. Her dialogue is varied and pleasant, too.

B-Tier Marriage Candidates

Haley

Yes, Haley starts out shallow and a little mean. That is the whole point of her arc. Watching her warm up to you and reveal her caring side is one of the sweetest slow burns in Pelican Town. Her photography hobby adds a layer most people never bother to notice, and the 10 Heart Event with her is super cute and romantic! She just misses the top spots for me, but she is a genuinely great pick.

Sebastian

Sebastian is the cool, and he is actually the first bachelor I married when I first played the game. He starts withdrawn and independent, but over time he lets you into his world and shows quiet affection and a sense of belonging.

His strength is that he stays himself, still private, still a loner, but feels safer and more open with you. The downside for his character is that his writing can feel a bit uneven. I feel like his personality is built more on strong quirks than deep ongoing growth, so he can feel a bit flat compared to more expanded NPCs.

Penny

Penny is the kindest person in the entire game, full stop. She teaches the town kids, deals with a tough home life living with her mom Pam, and stays gentle through all of it. If I ranked purely on heart, she would be near the top.

However, her story stays pretty quiet. She is wonderful, just not the most exciting and I kind of get bored with her easily.

Olivia (SVE)

Olivia is easily the most unique romance in the Expanded mod. She is the oldest marriage candidate in the whole game, a wealthy retired widow who made her fortune working with Joja Corp, and she lives at the Jenkins' Residence with her grown son Victor.

However, Olivia has expensive taste. She loves Wine, Blue Moon Wine, Pink Cake, Chocolate Cake, and pricey Golden Masks and Relics. If you are new to the game, you are going to struggle to win her over since most of those gifts are out of reach early on.

One more thing worth knowing: since both Olivia and Victor live in the same house and are both romanceable, dating mother and son at the same time triggers an awkward confrontation cutscene. So you need to pick a lane, for me marrying Victor is the better option.

Scarlett (SVE)

Scarlett is Sophia's best friend and a fellow cosplayer who lives in the Pondwood suburbs with her dad and step-dad. You first meet her during Sophia's two-heart event, and she becomes giftable after you see Sophia's eight-heart event and either fix the Community Center or go the Joja route.

She is warm, supportive, and shows up to all the festivals once you unlock her. I love her cosplay looks too! She is a sweet, lower-key option, which is exactly why she lands here rather than higher.

Alex

Alex is the classic jock, all about the gridball and his gym routine. What saves him from being one-note is his family backstory, which has more emotional weight than you expect. His relationship path is simple but effective. He goes from defensive and image-focused to openly affectionate and grounded. Overall, he is sweet and easy to please, but that's all.

C-Tier Marriage Candidates

Elliott

Eliott has the best hair in the valley and he knows it. He is an author living in a beach cabin, which sounds amazing until you actually talk to him and feel like he is reminding you he is better than you. He barely changes over the course of the game, and that pretentious aura keeps him stuck down here for me. Your mileage may vary, especially if the hair does it for you.

Shane

He has one of the best character arcs in the game. His journey through depression and recovery is pretty well written, and his love for his chickens are actually adorable. I respect him. But he is just not my type before or after his glow-up. I am happy for Shane. I just do not want to marry him.

Sam

Sam comes off as instantly likable and easygoing, but that’s also where his marriage arc can feel a bit shallow. He’s affectionate, supportive, and happy in the relationship, and he gradually shifts into a family-oriented mindset that can feel sweet in a simple way.

However, his child-like vibe shows up strongly after marriage. You will see it: Lots of relaxing, comics, pizza, skateboarding, and leaning on you for structure. Compared to other spouses, he is pretty low in my rank. He often feels more like a fun companion than a deeply evolving partner.

Sophia (SVE)

If we’re talking purely about looks, I’d rank Sophia and Scarlett at the top of the tier list. Sophia is one of the most visually memorable romance options in SVE, with her pink hair, dungarees, and heart choker giving her a really stylish, recognizable design. Her personality matches that aesthetic too.

However, she can be a little difficult to befriend early on since her loved gifts are fairly limited. Sophia is also a pretty polarizing character, so whether you enjoy her really depends on how much her vibe clicks with you. If it does, you’ll probably love her, but for me, that divisiveness is why she ends up a bit lower on the tier list.

Emily

Emily has more going on than almost anyone, and somehow that works against her. Her heart events are so random they could happen in nearly any order without changing much. The blue hair pulled me in when I was a new player, but over time she settled firmly into friend territory for me.

Every single one of these marriage candidates in Stardew Valley is someone's favorite, and that is the beauty of the game. My S-tier might be your C-tier, and that is completely fine.

If you want my real advice, go with Abigail or Leah for the best mix of personality and heart events in the base game. Pick Harvey or Maru if you want a warm, low-drama partner. And if you have Stardew Valley Expanded installed, do not sleep on Lance, Victor, and Magnus!
